It is a well known fact that Doctor Who has a massive gay following. This has always been the case even in the old days of the classic series. The producers tired to redress the balance when they brought in Leela as a companion for Tom Baker running around in a small piece of shammy leather just after the sports results on a Saturday evening or even Peri’s impressive cleavage which took everyone's attention away from the fact that Peter Davidson was regenerating.

But there was always that little bit of totty for us to look at, Jamie McCrimmon in his kilt, Turlough in his short shorts and Jason Connery with his top off. Anyone who has been to a Doctor Who convention, and yes I have to admit I have been to two such events, would know that if you didn’t pull you really weren't looking, or you could not get out of your Cyberman suit in time. It was not a case of coming out from behind the sofa but more coming out of the closet for the average male fan.

This has been accentuated even more with the new series. Obviously we have has two fairly fit Doctors. Christopher Eccleston was cute enough, especially with that smile and David Tennant was voted the sexiest man in the universe by the Pink Paper. As well as the two stars being a feast for they eyes we have had a number of gay references throughout the show, probably due to the fact that the chief writer was Russell T Davies, the man behind the original Channel 4 Queer as Folk. We have had a character whose sexuality is fluid in Captain Jack, played by the very cute John Barrowman. He even get to kiss the Doctor. The rest of the episodes has had a number of subtle references including a behind the scenes gay relationship going on in the Agatha Christie episode.

On top of this we have had the spin of show Torchwood (an anagram of Doctor Who) which is an adult spin off, with sex drugs and lots of rock and roll.

Tonight we have had the announcement of the new Doctor. It is hard to imagine any other casting getting such press coverage. The new actor was announced and interviewed in a special Doctor Who Confidential episode. There was much speculation, would it be a black man, would it be a woman, would it be a big star. In the end it was none of these. the new Doctor, at 26, is the youngest man to hold the role and is white, male and relatively unknown. His name is Matt Smith.

As one one the people who said, Oh God, No!” when Billy Piper was cast, I am reserving judgement. He will not appear on our screens till Spring 2010, so I am sure there will be lots of speculation about his Doctor before then. Let’s wait and see if he can continue the legacy in the manner we all wish. Personally, so far I do not feel let down by BBC Wales in their past decisions and so I trust them. As sorry as I am to see David Tennant go, almost a devastated as I was when Tom Baker left (I was only 11 at the time), the show must go on and is much bigger than one man.
