The Bullfighter and Gay Sponsorship

Josélito Otega's, a Spanish bullfighter has accepted a sponsorship deal from the “Gay Up” energy drink. He will now carry a cape with the words ‘Gay Up’ written on it.

The ‘Gay Up’ company is based in Colombia but it has a Málaga company that holds the franchise in Spain. In the past they had tried to sponsor the Málaga football team but the deal failed due to prejudice.

The ‘Gay Up’ chairman José María Terrón, told El Mundo that the bullfighting world should open up to the gay market, to renew itself and survive.

This decision has shaken the macho world of bull fighting, with its traditional manly costumes but Josélito does not feel the company logo will look out of place on his pink cape!

He told told the press, ‘I am a bullfighter. That is not going to change. I am going to go out into the ring as I have done until now, to risk my life, and the seven goring wounds on my body prove that,’ he said. ‘If the gay community welcomes me as an image or a symbol, that is fine.’
